The Mean Reds

Holly Golightly: You know those days when you get the mean reds?
Paul Varjak: The mean reds, you mean like the blues?
Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?
Paul Varjak: Sure.
Holly Golightly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that’d make me feel like Tiffany’s, then – then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name!

I’ve been in a funk. Technically, I’m still in the funk, but I’m working on getting out of it.

How do you pull yourself out of a funk?

Simple and chic. Totally loving those boots! To get out of the funk … there is no trick … I sulk and sulk and then when I get tired of sulking I get myself together and say enough is enough and try and get back on the groove!

My go-to list: yoga, candles, music, crafting, America’s Funniest Home Videos, volunteering. phone calls with friends. Not all at the same time ;)

Normally I hide until somebody contacts me to say I’ve disappeared. I sleep a lot and watch an atrocious about of TV off the computer (like series). Maybe that’s clinical depression. Or, sometimes I go shopping. One good thing about work travel is that is it basically indistinguishable from disappearing.

Oh girl, funks are the worst. Sometimes it’s so hard for me to pull myself out that it requires a little assistance. When I’ve not “gone over the edge”… I stick to the house — watch movies that make me laugh (not sure why, but 50 First Dates seems to be a good one), I avoid the films I usually gravitate toward — they are typically depressing (DO NOT SEE Blue Valentine!), read magazines, listen to music that inspires me (sometimes I sing at the top of my lungs while crying), play with the dog. Stay in my jammies all day or hang by the pool for some sunshine.

And JUST before I sequester myself for good, something hits me, T tells me to snap out of it and I realize I miss those amazing moments with him, my friends, my family. You know those moments that there isn’t any other place you’d rather be than there? You’ll feel it again soon, I’m sure of it. In the meantime, nurture yourself with the things that bring you the utmost joy. Good luck, thinking of you!

I FORCE myself to get dressed and I leave the house. It really doesn’t matter where. I actually REALLY didn’t feel like going anywhere last night because of a similar funk, but ended up singing karaoke by the end of it. I think the main thing is just getting around different energy. People that are not aware of your funk can help distract you for a bit, and then, before you know it, you’re singing Aerosmith or something.

I think volunteering is definitely on my list, thanks for the ideas! :)

We seem to have the same pattern. I told Brett I’d be just fine if
only we weren’t broke and I could go shoe shopping. I think he’s
    secretly hiding the credit cards.

Thanks, girl! I’m needing all the positive thoughts I can get :) I’ve
been contemplating Blue Valentine… thanks for the warning! I made
the mistake of seeing Eternal Sunshine when I was getting over a break
up… bad news. Definitely need to sit down with 50 First Dates again.
    Thanks!! xoxo

    Aerosmith is definitely a de-funker! Thanks :)

I agree with Holly!  I little shopping therapy always helps me…JK.  Although, shopping at Tiffany’s sounds nice!!  I have to get out to the park or go for a walk, when I’m in the funk.  Sunshine  is my therapy for the Mean Reds.

Maybe blogging might help you get out of your funk. Or you could go to Panera with your laptop and pretend I’m sitting across from you asking you questions about html?

Normally, I just read design books and that works. It helps inspire me. The last time I was in a funk (and it was horrible) I tried to figure out what was causing it. Then I actually made a list of things I could do to get out of that funk. I gave my self a pep talk and it really empowered me that I worked so hard to help myself feel better. I have never done this before, but it really helped. I hope you beat your funk.

I’ve been in the same funk lately. Changing my hair is my usual answer. But I love my hair right now, so I’m at a loss :) I think watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s may be a good start since you’ve mentioned it.

Thank you for the advice! Lists are a great way to figure things out :)

I was thinking about watching it. It’s one of those movies that always
motivates me to change it up. :) Hope you get out of your funk, too!
Hair changes usually help me too.

play vid games until your eyes hurt, take long baths, do nothing you don’t feel like doin, make to-do lists but don’t stress over doin’ any of it so you don’t feel so blah about the fact that you’re in a funk.
also that outfit is really cute
and the changes you made to your layout look nice

    haha thanks! :)
