Knick-Knack Pots

Well, I overcame my general laziness yesterday and got some stuff done. One my “done” list:

Finally closed the bank account I had before I got married. After a year and a half, all it took was a little “threat” from the credit union. Use it, or pay $5 a month!  I high-tailed it over there.

Got shelves up in my workspace. I never thought I’d see the day when B would install shelves in a rental house, but it finally happened.

Purchased an obscene amount of Benadryl and Zyrtec-D. We got the cedar fever blues.

Finally wrote reviews of all the Taos restaurants. Will be posting, and should get posting over at Yelp.

Updated some LinkedIn stuff. I’m not sure what LinkedIn is for, but I try to keep it updated.

Made these knick-knack pots for my new workspace. Easy-peasy. I show you how, after the jump.

Materials Needed:

Little pots. I bought these cream-with-black-stars metal pots at IKEA yesterday, 75¢ a piece.

Pretty paper. I bought this atlas paper at The Paper Place for a couple of dollars a sheet. I’ve used it all over the house.

Double-sided tape.

Scissors.

Pen/Pencil.

How:

1.) I started by turned the paper wrong-side up, then rolled the pot across as far as I could without running off. It made an impression of what the pot would look like if flattened out, which is what you want to make your paper look like. The trick is to keep it relatively straight. You may want to make a pattern on less pretty paper first, and use that as your guide.

2.) Once the impression is made, pencil it in. This is helpful when you’re cutting it out.

3.) Cut it out, then try to fit the paper to the pot. Don’t use the tape until you’re sure the paper is a match!

4.) Once it’s safe, put a piece of double-sided tape all around the top lip, and start tacking.

5.) When it’s tacked to your satisfaction, tack down the overlapping seam.

6.) Trim!

7.) Beam with happiness at your new knick-knack pot. Mine will be holding all the miscellaneous sewing accouterments.

What a great project…I buy those galvanized buckets from Ikea all the time. They are such a great price.

    Take care,

Hey I love your project and tutorial, but most of all I love your style of writing, honesty and sense of humor. I’ve laughed outloud and then caught myself, put my hand over my mouth, then laughed again. You know you can do this with lampshades too — but I hadn’t thought about buckets. Great for old paint buckets. Blessings Terri — http://www.morningdewdrops.typepad.com
