First Fashion Beauty Friend Friday

Occasion: Alamo Drafthouse with B
Shirt: XXI | Skirt: American Apparel | Shoes: Target

So, I’ve been kind of bored with style posts lately, not that they’re not fun, but with 108º weather, and a sparse summer budget, my wardrobe hasn’t exactly expanded. I really like reading Cathy of Austin Slave to Fashion‘s weekly Fashion Beauty Friend Friday posts, so I thought I’d jump on the proverbial bandwagon. Every other week, the group sends out questions to be answered by members. It’s like ready-made content, as well as a social networking group. Here goes.

1. As a someone who writes/blogs about fashion, have you placed yourself into some sort of blogging category?
I kind of changed categories a couple of times. When I started Hello Wife, I was really interested in exploring the idea of marriage, being a wife, and being a modern woman. While I’m still interested in those things, I found quickly that a.) I wasn’t nearly qualified or well-read enough to create content of that sort, and b.) I was complaining a lot! So, after the TXSCC this year, I re-worked my blogging category to encompass several of the things which hold my interest: fashion, food, and relationships.

2. What keeps you from or encourages you to label yourself as a certain kind of blogger?
I think the amazing community I’ve become a part of has helped keep me interested in style blogging. There’s so much creative outlet in fashion and beauty, so even on the days (weeks, months!) where I’m not interested in creating art, or food, or designs, I’m still interested in looking and feeling my best, and having a community of women who are also interested in that creative process is very inspiring to me.

3. When picking blogs to read and follow are you drawn to ones that indicate a certain group or way of thinking/being?
I tend to follow bloggers with whom I have a personal relationship, or who I find inspiring creatively. There are some bloggers whose voices are just so strong and interesting, and some who have lots of pretty pictures. I like them both. :)

4. Do you think there are benefits in labeling yourself or others?
I think there’s a benefit. When I first started Hello Wife, I was drawn to more of the “mommy blogger” scene, only because they were wives — for the most part — and were doing a lot of cooking and DIY projects, but as I kept reading, I realized my status as a childless woman was keeping me from really connecting to those bloggers. I began to seek out independent women who were interested in the sorts of things I was, and the labels helped narrow those areas down for me.

5. Agree or Disagree – We’re all just people; we don’t need all the labels.
Disagree. While I think it’s good to give people a chance in real life, in the blogosphere, you have about 3 seconds to catch my attention and keep it. Labeling bloggers or blogs is good because I can literally Google “fashion bloggers austin texas” and find all kind of people and bloggers right in my own backyard. If anything, I’d say labeling creates a more cohesive and easily navigable community for bloggers.

I am glad you’ve found your focus, because it works! And we got to meet! I agree that labels are basically just ways to save yourself time, and it makes sense to be drawn to certain “types” that resonate with us.

I too like blogs where I connect with them personally … pretty pictures are always a plus too! I agree about ‘labels’ too … sometimes people tend to over simplify or over complicate things … if we just saw the benefit and not analyze everything it would make more sense!

You’re one of the inspirations for my blog! Before, I thought you had to pick “fashion” “mommy/wife” or “food” as a label. (Weird mental block?) But I’ve seen you dipping into each of those categories, and doing so very successfully. And I realized, if I overall like someone as a blogger, I’m going to enjoy their content, whatever it is.
Now, my blog is whatever *I* want it to be, because ultimately, it’s for myself.
