Happy Friday 2/25!
I usually don’t participate in SXSW (if you’ve ever worked service industry during SX, you know why!) but this year I’m going to leave my house and go enjoy the festivities. I’m super excited about the Texas Style Council Conference. Got my registration and everything! (If you’re going, say hi in the comments!)
Also, I have been asked by my publication to judge Duo’s Style Off Event during the boutique crawl, so it’ll be a full weekend of fashion for me! Duo is still accepting participants for the casting call:
“Duo Austin will be having a casting call on Thursday, Feb. 24, (7-9pm) for their Style Off event happening on Saturday, Mar.12. Simply turn in your resume on the 24th and the ladies at Duo will be choosing six stylists to participate in the Style Off. The participants will have a certain amount of time to use their fashion experience and creativity to put together as many looks as possible. The final winner will be receiving several amazing prizes.”
So if you’re a fashionista with some skills, go check it out!
Here are some things I stumbled across while making the rounds this week:
• If you haven’t been vaccinated, or if you haven’t vaccinated your daughters, read this article by a young woman who had a scary brush with cervical cancer, then go get the HPV vaccine! I got it when I was a freshman in college, and stories like this always make me thankful I did.
• These fortune cookie purses are the cutest, and they’re made out of recycled leather, which you can read about on the website.
• Big Girls, Small Kitchen (heart!) have some good pointers on how to have people over for brunch.
• My gorgeous sister posted some new photos this week (Hi Brit!)
• Blogs I found and hearted <3:
A La Main (pretty things, wedding inspiration, design geek-iness)
Condo Blues (green living, decoration & saving monies)
Lizzypunch (a real-girl-friendly fashion blog)
Life, Crafts, and Whatever (the name says it all!)
Happy Friday!
Happy Friday and Happy Birthday to B!
It feels like this week just flew by! Between insomnia, deadlines, and fashion events, it seems I haven’t done a single productive thing this week. (Okay, well I made granola, so that’s something.)
I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend. We’ll be celebrating B’s 37th (37th!) this weekend, then it’s back to the dissertation work for him. Poor guy, I feel like he works all the time, but he’s almost done. I’m rooting for you, baby!! Maybe I’ll get to work on one of the old-lady-dresses I bought a few weeks ago at an estate sale. It has been dress weather in Austin…. Hm. We’ll see how that pans out.
Here’s some of the things I found wonderful/appalling/eyebrow-raising this week. Have a good weekend!
• Rep. Moore (D – Wisconsin) and Rep. Speier (D – California) are my new heroines in Congress. These women kicked ass this week, fighting for a woman’s right to, not only choose, but to plan her pregnancy and access the healthcare that many women cannot afford. Amazing women!
• Finally! A rating system for finding out who’s better: you or your husband. A marital rating scale from the 1930s has been making the rounds this week. I took a few minutes to fill it out. It looks like I’m winning! woot.
• Sexy panties for when your Aunt Flo is in town… I definitely could have used these a few years ago. (Nowaday’s I’m straight-pill until nature forces itself on me.)
• Life Hacker offered some advice on how to quit your job with your “contacts, credentials, and class intact,” which also would have been helpful a while back.
• I fell in love with some (new-to-me) blogs: Eat the Damn Cake!, City of Dionne and You Are My Fave.
Happy Friday, 2-11-11
Happy Friday! We’re off to celebrate my father-in-law’s 91st birthday, but I wanted to share some of the things I found interesting/wonderful/outrageous this week. Not necessarily in that order.
• I’m totally in love with Small Girls, Big Business! As a small girl myself, I know it’s hard to feel like you’re being treated like a professional. I love it that these gals have taken the “small girl” persona and made it a brand! That’s awesome! Also, their website is gorgeous.
• There’s an interesting discussion going on over at Teenagerie about if feminists can like fashion, or if the love of fashion is inherently anti-feminist.
• Last week, NPR ran a story about how our collective belief that little girls should not play rough like little boys is putting them at a health disadvantage later in life. According to the paper cited from Social Science and Medicine, little boys are more likely to have asthma at a young age, but as girls grow up, they’re more likely to have long-term health issues. So that’s one reason to let your little girl play with the boys.
• I stumbled onto these awesome iPhone and Macbook decals. <3!
Have a great weekend!
Happy Friday 1/28
It’s been a busy week! First my deadline, which is always a 42-hour stress-fest, then my mom came into town (not stressful, but definitely not lounge time!), I aired out my dirty laundry online (whew! It feels better in here.), and I did a little shopping around town. Can’t beat that.
I had some good discoveries online this week, for your Friday, here are some of the more notable ones:
Kendi Everyday is starting her Winter 30 for 30 Remix on February 1st. I’m thinking about joining in, officially or unofficially. I don’t know if I have 30 workable pieces, so maybe unofficially.
The Girl Store has an interesting campaign to raise funds for Indian girls who would be sold into sex slavery or marriage if they can’t go to school. Genius or creepy? Both, I think. Very effective!
Jezebel re-posted a Gizmodo article on the contents of Taco Bell “beef.” Let’s call it a good reason never to crave a Gordita again.
Speaking of unspeakable ingredients, Bravetart has a recipe for homemade sprinkles (jimmies). I’m kind of intrigued!
Oh, Hello Friend is giving away free ad space to 7 lucky winners! Giveaway ends January 30th.
Happy Friday!
It’s Friday! I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend of garage sales, visits with the in-laws, and catching up with old friends. It seems like too often the weekend is squandered away with projects, projects, projects! I’m happy to be taking it easy this weekend, I definitely need to recharge after the craziness of the week.
Here’s some stuff I really liked this week:
Rabbit Write offers her two cents on being in a relationship with your partner.
The Texas Style Council is having a Conference in March. I’m going!!
I love this SXSW sketch by Amber Demure! It’s never been my experience, but I’ve heard the stories!
I wish this post on how to have a Dollar Store wedding had been around when we were planning our, Oy!
And last, but certainly not least, Congresswoman Giffords is making a remarkable recovery, after only two weeks. This woman is a superhero.
Have a good weekend!
Welcome!
